Legends

The origins of the Olympic competition lost in the mists of time. One thing is certain - the first recorded winner is Koroibos of Elis, who won the short course (dromos) at a distance of one stadium, and it happened in the year 776 BC. These games have become the basis of measurement of time by the Greek historian Timaeus (c. 345-250 BC). He described them as the Olympics and the Olympic and counting now on going Greek, dividing them into four sections (from the Games to the Olympics), that is the Olympics. Previously, a measure of historical chronology was the year to get Troy (by today's calculations in 1184 BC).

With a variety of historical sources it is known, however, that the Olympics in Olympia were held earlier. According to the legend, the beginning of the Olympic Games were associated with the Zeus, who fought with Kronos for world domination.

But they were people among ancient historians such as Strabo (c. 60 BC - 20 BC), who claimed that" the old legends about the premise of the temple and the establishment of the Olympic Games are unworthy of attention." For the founders of the Olympic Strabo considered Etolzho who came to the Peloponnese under the command of Oksylosa at the end of the second millennium BC.
